Linux users finally have an official ChatGPT desktop app. OpenAI has released the ChatGPT desktop app for Linux in preview, bringing ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex together in one desktop experience for supported Linux systems.
The release closes a notable gap in OpenAI's desktop lineup and gives Linux users a first-party option instead of relying entirely on the browser or separate command-line tools.
OpenAI announced the Linux preview on August 11, 2026, confirming support for several widely used Linux distributions and both x64 and ARM64 hardware.
The app brings together the main desktop experiences OpenAI already offers elsewhere: Chat and Work, plus Codex.
Chat is designed for everyday conversations and questions. ChatGPT Work focuses on longer, multi-step tasks and creating finished work, while Codex is OpenAI's agent for software development and technical workflows.
That unified approach is particularly useful for Linux users who work across programming, research, writing, analysis, and other productivity tasks without wanting to constantly switch between separate applications.
OpenAI is starting the preview with a defined list of officially supported Linux versions.

OpenAI also supports both x64 and ARM64 architectures, and the Linux app is distributed through .deb and .rpm packages.
That covers two of the most common Linux package formats. OpenAI's announcement does not currently list Arch Linux, openSUSE, or Red Hat Enterprise Linux as officially supported.
Because the software is still in preview, users on unsupported distributions should avoid assuming that unofficial packages will provide the same compatibility or security guarantees as OpenAI's official builds.
For developers, the integration of Codex may be one of the most significant parts of the Linux release.
Codex is designed to work directly with development projects rather than functioning only as a conversational coding assistant. OpenAI's documentation says local Codex environments can work with project files and repositories, while Codex's command-line tools can inspect and edit code and run commands from the terminal.
That makes the Linux desktop app especially relevant for software developers, many of whom already use Linux as their primary development environment.
OpenAI also provides permission controls for local Codex workflows. Permission profiles can restrict filesystem and network access, with options ranging from read-only access to broader workspace permissions.
OpenAI says locally running Codex uses an operating-system-enforced sandbox, with default protections that include restricted write access and limited network access.
Those controls matter. An AI coding agent capable of interacting with files and executing commands has significantly more access to a computer than a standard chatbot.
The Linux app also includes ChatGPT Work, OpenAI's agent-oriented experience for longer and more involved productivity tasks.
OpenAI describes Work as an agent that can gather context, plan an approach, take actions across tools and files, and produce finished outputs such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and other work products.
Bringing Work and Codex together inside the same desktop application gives Linux users access to both general productivity workflows and software-development tools without needing separate desktop clients.
Users can move between ChatGPT and Codex within the desktop interface, while Chat and Work are available as experiences within ChatGPT.
Because the Linux release is currently labeled a preview, there are still some unanswered questions.
OpenAI's initial announcement does not provide a date for when the Linux app will leave preview, nor does it announce when additional Linux distributions might receive official support. OpenAI's main ChatGPT download page and some help documentation also appear to be in the process of catching up with the new Linux release. The Linux-specific announcement is currently the clearest source for supported distributions and package formats.
For that reason, Linux users should rely on OpenAI's official channels for installation files rather than downloading unofficial builds from third-party mirrors.
Linux has long been important to developers and technical users, but it has historically lacked the same first-party ChatGPT desktop experience available on other major desktop platforms.
